The longest subphase of meiosis I is prophase I.
- During prophase I, the main events that occur are:
1. The condensation of chromatin fibres to form chromosomes.
2. Synapsis begins followed by crossing over between the two homologous chromosomes.
- Prophase I can be subdivided into five stages, namely Leptotene, Zygotene, Pachytene, Diplotene and Diakinesis.
