Propahse I- It is the longest phase of meiosis,Three major event occur in propahse I, that are- condensation of chromatin into chromosome, next is formation of synapsis, and finally crossing over. These events occurs in 5 substeps: A) Leptonema- A cell destined to become a gamete enters this stage.

The longest subphase of meiosis I is prophase I.

  • During prophase I, the main events that occur are:

1. The condensation of chromatin fibres to form chromosomes.

2. Synapsis begins followed by crossing over between the two homologous chromosomes.

  • Prophase I can be subdivided into five stages, namely Leptotene, Zygotene, Pachytene, Diplotene and Diakinesis.
