On a spherical reference surface of the earth such as a globe, lines of longitude are not parallel (as opposed to lines of latitude), rather they converge toward the poles. The ground distance of a degree of longitude is at its greatest (about 111km or 69 miles) at the equator and decreases to 0 at the poles.
