Write down the activities performed, life led and discrimination faced by specially abled or differently abled children. Suggest ways to include them in every sphere of life with equal rights as citizens.

  • Disability is defined as “long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder [a person's] full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.” (UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities)
  • The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Government of India, 2016) defines disability access as the “full and equal access to all the rights, responsibilities and benefits of society.”
  • Lack of access to public places, specifically, places of worship, public auditoriums, educational institutions, parks, hotels, public transport, etc. is a problem that Persons with Disabilities face on the daily.
  • The WHO has recommended that the built environment may be changed to improve health conditions, prevent impairments, and improve outcomes for PWD.
  • The educational institutions in the country are not completely disabled-friendly. The lack of facilities in schools hinders access to avail proper education for disabled children.
  • There is a lack of disabled-friendly auditoriums, libraries, and proper sanitation facilities in schools.
  • One initiative that has been made into a requirement is that a minimum of two teachers who are willing to work with the differently abled should be given specialized and professional training in order to deal with and positively interact with these students.
  • Students who do not have any disabilities should be willing to support and encourage those who do.
