1) He uses the stairs as it just going up/never ending because their never was a end to the war

2)The american puplic felt worried about the men who were serving and and when they saw a car pull up to their house and a minister steppe out or if they got a telegram from western union it didn't end well. Alot of men died to friendly fire during vietnam.
