Adjectival endings
Adjectives are often formed from the verb form (e.g. attract -- attractive):
sometimes the consonant of the verb changes (e.g. save
safe). The
present participle or past participle verb form, ending in ing or ed, may
be used as an adjective (e.g. charming, dazzling; fried, prized). A common
adjectival ending, added to the noun, is ful (e.g. colourful, hopeful); the
opposite (negative) meaning is created by adding the suffix less (e.g.
colourless, hopeless). There are another dozen adjectival endings - some
of which are very similar, like ant and ent, ble and able - which have to
be learnt.
