(a) The technique used is fractional distillation , it is based on the principle that different volatile liquid have different vapor pressure and boiling points

Mechanism - A mixture of two volatile liquids are taken , it is boiled as to increase the vapor pressure. After a while the vapor of the liquid which has a lower point and higher vapour pressure tend to cross the fractionating column more and the vapour of the liquid while has a less vapour pressure and higher boiling point tend to condense more on the fractionating column

So more volatile component component is later made to condense and separate out as pure liquid using the condensation tube .

(b) It us used to separate ideal solutions, for example a benzene toluene mixture

One of the industrial use is to separate different fractions of crude oil
