(b) During inhalation, oxygen enters our lungs due to which phrenic and intercostal muscels undergo contraction and diaphragm becomes flat and gets lowered which increases the area of thoracic cavity for taking more oxygen. In the same way ribs and sternum show upward and outward movement which also increases area of thoracic cavity.
During exhalation, diaphragm relaxes and chest contracts and ribs how downward and inward movement. This results in decrease in thoracic cavity which explels out carbon dioxide from lungs.
