In this figure,the hour hand is between 4 & 5.

So,the time is between 4 o'clock & 5 o'clock.

The minute hand is at 8 .

So,the minute hand has moved (8×5) = 40 small divisions.

$\therefore$ The time is 4:40.

We can also express it as 40 minutes past 4.

Clearly, it is 20 minutes less to be 5 o'clock.

$\therefore$ We can also say that the time is 20 minutes to 5.

Thus,we can express the above time in three ways:-

• 4:40
• 40 minutes past 4
• 20 minutes to 5
