looking up at the sky, how can you distinguish between a planet and a star? in which direction do stars appear to move in the sky?

We can distinguish a planet from a star by observing it for 2 to 3 hours because the planet its position ecery 2-3 hours unlike stars. Stars appear to move from west to east but they actually move from East to west.
