I think the doctrine of lapse a policy started by lord Dalhousie which was made to annex any states in which the king died without providing a natural male heir. In my opinion this worked out for the East India Company in their favour. There were many great kingdoms they annexed and took over with the help of this policy. Through this they slowly started taking over more and more parts of India. While this worked in favour for the British the Indian rulers were the ones to suffer.
