Besides being an imperialist, Dalhousie was also reformist. The first railway line in India between Mumbai to Thane in 1853A.D.,wireless system between India and England, establishment of Public Works Department, English education etc.were all introduced during his tenure. He passed laws to ban child marriage and advocated widow remarriage.

During the reign of Lord Dalhousie the second Sikh war and different battles at Ramnagar,Sadulapur, Gujarat were fought .He was determined to merge Punjab in British empire .He devised a policy doctrine of lapse,and according to it when ruler of kingdom died without natural heir ,that kingdom would annexed by britisher unless and until adoption had been earlier approved by British .With this he annexed Jhansi, Nagpur ,Satara ,and many other kingdoms.
