Leaves die back each winter. The three kinds of leaves in a seedling lotus are the coin-sized leaves that follow the cotyledons, or seed leaves, followed in four to six days by floating leaves. Large 2-foot-wide standing leaves then develop with 3- to 6-foot-long stems that hold the leaves well above the water level. Stems connect to the middle of the leaf's underside. The leaf surface is water-repellent, and water beads up on the surface. The ability of the leaf to self-clean by the repelled water droplets traveling over leaf surfaces to pick up dust particles is termed the "lotus effect" and is due to the leaf's nanostructure, which minimizes adhesion. The leaves and stalks contain air ducts of various sizes.

The aquatic sacred lotus plant (Nelumbo nucifera) is grown worldwide for its 8-inch-wide showy flowers and round, upward-cupped waxy green leaves that can reach 2 feet across. ... Many cultivars exist with flowers of different shades of pink to white; single, semidouble and double flowers; and different plant sizes.
