The recent rapid increase in the demand for and application of electronic devices for generating new musical sounds has created a new rôle for the loudspeaker. Heretofore, the primary rôle for the loudspeaker was to act as a reproducer. That is, to reproduce with as little distortion or coloration as possible in a given acoustical environment sound pressures corresponding to the electrical input signal over the frequency range of 35 Hz to 20 kHz. This target performance was considered as having been achieved if the peak reproduced sound‐pressure levels could reach 115 to 120 dB. In the rôle as an element in the chain of devices required for the generation of new musical sounds, the loudspeaker is often called upon to add coloration to the “reproduced” signals and to generate sound pressure levels well in excess of 120 dB. Some design problems connected with the design of loudspeakers for this new application will be discussed.
