Hola

in scene 6, I compared Lorenzo with the Romeo. I thought they were in a similar position. They both wanted to elope with the girl they love. Although it is not plausible to compare two different people, this comparison somewhat shows how valuable Lorenzo sees his relationship with Jessica is. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo was never actually late. He was always on time and is willing to do anything for Juliet. However, in The Merchant of Venice, Lorenzo was late on the night, when he was supposed to elope with Jessica. In the beginning scene 6, Gratiano states: “And it is marvel he outdwells his hour, For lovers ever run before the clock” and “Who riseth from a feast With that Keen appetite that he sits down?” Gratiano made a good point. “For lovers ever run before the clock” means that people that are in love usually come earlier “before the clock”. It really made me question, does that mean Lorenzo finds Jessica insignificant? Furthermore, Gratiano’s example of a person feeling the same way before and after a feast is another way of saying that Lorenzo finds no significant change in their love, even after she elopes with him. So, what Gratiano is truly suggesting is that once you posses something, their is no need to be excited about it afterwards.
