Summary of the poem lovely is youth by kalidasa:
- The poem Lovely is Youth is an excerpt from JG Jennings' translation of Abhijnana Shakuntalam by Kalidasa
- India's greatest playwright and poet.
- His plays and poetry primarily stem out of the stories of the Vedas epics and puranas, especially, Mahabharata and Ramayana.
- The poem speaks about the transcience of youth and swiftness of the passage of time.
- Being young is blissful, but it is not everlasting. It may fade away quick, paving way for old age.
- So all of us should keep some time apart for ourselves to enjoy the most beautiful phase of our life, ie. Youth.
- Youth is beautiful and blissful. But the hues(colour) of youth are not permanent. Youth is short lived. It is like a fragrant air that comes and goes quickly from some unknown source.
- The poet compares youth to the fair noon. He says that, noon is fair, beautiful, the brightest phase of a day, where the sun shines so brightly.
- It is the time when the sun reaches the zenith of its brightness. But it cannot keep on shining for a long time.
- t has to fade and move away paving ways for the evening shadows. Here poet says that just like the fair sun, is our youth. It is the period when we are at our zenith.
- But it shall fade away quickly, paving way for the peering shadows of old age.Soon the night steps in with its wider visions. Here night is also portrayed as beautiful.
- Youth is also bright in its own way, it also appears wearing the veil of light from the heavens. The moonlit night and the constellation of stars makes the night evermore fair.
- There is a spectacular vision, which reminds us of God's love for us as our creator.
- He has created such a beautiful universe for us and what is the use of all these, if don't have time to stand and stare?.
- The poet tries to reinforce the idea that youth is ephemeral and it may fade away quickly. He then compares it to a meteor, a falling star which is as short lived as youth.
- He says that in this whole universe, human life is as short lived as a meteor flight. And our whole universe is not sufficient to fill one beautiful night as mentioned earlier.
- That is..life with its different phases is beautiful and it has to be enjoyed and no material pleasures could replace the beauty of it.
- So we need to set apart time for enjoying the beauty of life, especially the most blissful youth.
