When two elements (A and B) form more than one compounds, the mass of element (B) combine with mass of element (A) are always in the ratio of small whole number .
e.g.
C + O2 = CO
C + O2 = CO2
here ,
O and O2 are two masses of oxygen.
Are combine with carbon.
So, ratio of O and O2 are in ratio of small number, i.e. 16:32 or 1:2
