bearing capacity is the capacity of soil to support the loads applied to the ground. The bearing capacity of soil is the maximum average contact pressure between the foundation and the soil which should not produce shear failure in the soil.

There are a great number of factors which are responsible in affecting the capacity of the soil.


Factors like the permeability, shear strength, density and many others actually affect the bearing capacity of the soil.


For example if we were to take loose sand we would see that it has a very less amount of bearing as compared to dense soil.
