1. Describe any three properties of true solution.

Ans: Different properties of solutions are as follows:

a. It is a homogeneous mixture. Through combining two or more substances, a mixture is produced. A homogeneous solution tends to be identical, no matter how you sample it.

b. Solutions are not visible to naked eyes. Suspensions are a heterogeneous mixture of two or more substances. Particles of the solute do not dissolve in the solvent rather they remain suspended in bulk throughout. The size of particles of suspension is large enough to be visible from naked eyes.

c. Particles don’t scatter a beam of light passing through it and hence the path of the light is not visible.

2. A container contains solution of about 80ml and the amount of solvent used was 50.5ml. Calculate the amount of solute used.

Solve: Let be:

         Solute = x

=> Solvent + Solute = Solution

=> 50.5 + x = 80

=>      x        = 80 - 50.5

=>      x        = 29.5

Thus, The amount of solute used is 29.5ml.

3. Sea water can be classified as homogeneous as well as hetrogeneous mixture. Comment.

Ans: The sea-water contains a mixture of salt and some other bigger size of impurities and a mixture of several gases in seawater. Due to other bigger size of impurities, seawater is classified as a heterogeneous mixture while due to a mixture of several gases and salt in seawater it is classified as homogeneous mixture.

4. Under which category of mixture will you classify alloys and why ?

Ans: Alloys are homogeneous mixtures because they are made of a mixture of different elements (mostly metals) that are mixed uniformly.

5. Give examples for solution in form of liquid, solid and gas.

Ans: Solid - Homogeneous mixture of two or more metals (i.e. alloys)

EXAMPLE: copper in gold.

        Liquid - Mixture of miscible liquids

EXAMPLE: alcohol in water.

        Gas - Mixture
