Ethane into Ethene :

1st Method

1) First React With One Mole Of Cl₂

CH₃-CH₃ + Cl₂ —-> CH₃-CH₂-Cl + HCl

2) Then React CH₃-CH₂-Cl With KOH

CH₃-CH₂-Cl + KOH —> CH₂=CH₂+ KCl + H₂O

2nd Method

1) Heating CH₃-CH₃

CH₃-CH₂-Cl —> CH₂=CH₂ + H₂

Methane into Ethane :

Reacting It With Cl₂

CH_{4} + Cl₂ → CH₃-Cl + HCl

Reacting Na With Two Moles of CH₃-Cl

2CH₃-Cl + 2Na ---> CH₃-CH₃ + 2NaCl

Ethane Into Methane:

CH₃-CH₃ + HCl ---> CH₃-CH₂-Cl

CH₃-CH₂-Cl + KOH ----> CH₃-CH₂-OH + KCl

CH₃-CH₂-OH (heating it in presence of KOH)  ---> CH₃-CH₂-COOH

CH₃-CH₂-COOH + Na ----> CH₃-COONa

CH₃-COONa ( Heating in Presence of NaOH) ---> CH_{4}
