Given :

Luminosity of Rigel star = 17,000 * Luminosity of Sun

Surface temperature of Sun = 6000 Kelvin

Surface temperature of Rigel = ?

Solution:

Luminosity is directly proportional to 4th power of surface temperature.

i.e, L ∝ T⁴

So, Luminosity of star/Luminosity of Sun = (Surface temperature of star/Surface temperature of Sun)⁴

\sqrt[4]{17000}= \frac{T_{star}}{6000}

11.42 * 6000 = Surface temperature of star

∴Surface temperature of Rigel star is 68520 Kelvin.
