Th e Ahoms are an important Assamese tribe. Th ey ruled over Kamrup, Darrang, Nowgong, Sibsagar,
Lakhimpur and portions of the Sadiya frontier tract for nearly 600 years.
• Th e Ahoms had trade relations with Bengal, Bihar, Bhutan, Tibet and Myanmar. Th eir society was
divided into clans called khels. A khel oft en controlled several villages.
• Th e Ahom state depended upon forced labour. Th e paiks were forced to work for the state.
• In 1662, the Mughals under Mir Jumla attacked the Ahom kingdom but were not much successful.
• Th e Ahoms remained an independent state till the British took them over in 1826, when the former had
been weakened by Burmese invasions.
