Salinity means amount of salt dissolved in water or any other solvents.

Explanation:

What is salinity?

• In simple words salinity is concentration of salt in soils or water.
• Salinity also known as Saltiness.
• It is expressed by g/kg or ppt (parts per thousand) or g/L units.
• Salinity classified by their causes in 3 types:

1. Primary salinity (Natural salinity): Caused by accumulation of salt  of rainfall water or weathering of rocks over thousands of years.
2. Secondary salinity (Dryland salinity): Caused when the level of primary salinity water rise to the ground water level.
3. Tertiary salinity (Irrigation salinity): When irrigation water are applied to crops, the water will evaporate and salt will remain on the soil and repeating this process over years cause tertiary salinity.

By calculating the salinity of water of seas, rivers, lakes, etc. we can get the idea of the natural habitats of living organisms which are present in that amount of salinity.
