Lysosomes are acidic organelles in which molecules are broken down by hydrolytic enzymes. If these enzymes leaked into the cytoplasm of the cell, they could degrade many cellular components, leading to cell death. However, these enzymes have low activities in the cytosol. Why might this be?

Answer:

hydrolase enjyme is active only in acidic pH 5 which is maintained inside the lysosome by an active H+ pump situated in the membrane of lysosome. Outside the lysosome the pH is greater than 7 ( 7.2) . so the hydrolase enjymes remains less active there.
