The lysosomes contain several digestive enzymes which when released bring about the breakdown of various cytoplasmic structures. If these enzymes are released freely in the cell, they would result in autodigestion of the cell itselt. Therefore, they are reffered to as the suicide bags of the cell.
They provide energy by controlled breakdown of stored food substances(Intracellular digestion).

AcharyaVII: Hey..doesn't mitochondria release energy??
prantika2: yes, mitochondria help in the release of energy from food which is stored in the form of ATP molecules. And lysosomes does intracellular digestion. They digest the stored food during digestion. got it?
prantika2: *starvation
AcharyaVII: baba re baba
AcharyaVII: but ....some doubts remain..let them be
prantika2: no u should clarify them.!
prantika2: wht doubt do u have?
AcharyaVII: good girl..but not now
prantika2: thankx okkh ^_^

They are called so because lysosomes facilitate in intracellular digestion and destroy foreign bodies.
Also when the cell is old or injured, these digest cell organelles itself(some cytoplasmic structures) hence known as suicide bags.
They also digest cartilage cells (for the purpose of forming bones).
