✯CONJUNCTIONS

A conjunction is a word,or a group of words, that joins together words, phrases and clauses.

Examples:

  • Kiran and Rakesh are school captains.(connecting two words)
  • He takes the medicine once in the morning and once at night (connecting two phrases)
  • Her work is slow, but she will finish it in time.(connecting two main clauses)

✯KINDS OF CONJUNCTIONS

Conjunctions that join clauses can be classified under three heads.

Coordinating: single words that connect clauses of the same level or class (but, and,or,nor, for, yet,so,etc.)

Example:

I didn't return the book, but my friend was kind and told me to do it later.

Correlative: Paired words that connect clauses of the same level or class (both... and, not,only.... but also, either....or, neither...nor,etc.)

Example:

We should either inform our parents about this or go to the police.

The placement of correlative conjunctions affects the meaning of the sentence.

Examples:

  • she must be practicing the drums either in the cellar or in the garage.
  • Either she or her brother must be practicing the drums in the cellar.

Subordinating: words that introduce the subordinating clause and connect it to the main clause (where, when, after, since, till, until, while,as soon as, before, because, since,so, that, unless, although, until,if,etc.)

Example:

I could not take pictures because photography was prohibited here.
