इरेटोस्थनीज का जन्म 276 ईसा पूर्व के आसपास साइरेन में एक ग्रीक कॉलोनी में हुआ था, जो वर्तमान लीबिया में स्थित है। उन्हें एथेंस की अकादमियों में शिक्षित किया गया था और उन्हें फराह टॉलेमी III द्वारा 245 ईसा पूर्व में सिकंदरिया में ग्रेट लाइब्रेरी चलाने के लिए नियुक्त किया गया था। हेड लाइब्रेरियन और विद्वान के रूप में कार्य करते हुए, इरेटोस्थनीज ने दुनिया के बारे में एक व्यापक ग्रंथ लिखा, जिसे भूगोल कहा जाता है।

Carl Ritter is known as father of human geography and he was known for his organic analogy, even you can find some other names such as Xavier Hommaire de Hell and Élisée Reclus who are known as one of the founders of modern geography.  

He occupied the first chair in Geography at the University of Berlin, Germany.

He believed that geography consisted of a physiology and not just natural resources like mountains and rivers.
