Long answer 4- If a transparent ruler is held in sunlight, we see various colors because sunlight is white light and it has seven colors .When rays of light after passing through ruler splits into seven colours .This band of seven colours is known as spectrum. The splitting of white light into seven colours is known as dispersion of light.
