She eventually developed a desire to take the bus. Soon, the wish developed into a desire, and she resolved to make good on that desire. She began to listen in on the conversations of her neighbours who frequently used the bus, and she would occasionally ask them thoughtful questions to learn more in the process. She immediately understood that the town was six miles from her village and that it took the bus 45 minutes to travel one trip. A one-way fare of thirty pence made a roundtrip fare of sixty pence. She so began to plan and replan in order to sneak away during her mother's afternoon nap and return without her being aware of it. It was difficult for her to avoid the temptation of candies, peppermint, and merry-go-rounds as she needed to save money. When she had finally saved enough money, the courageous eight-year-old boarded the bus on a lovely day when it wasn't particularly crowded. She resisted accepting assistance from the conductor or other passengers. Everyone found it funny to observe the young girl acting like an adult by herself. The conductor, who liked to joke, referred to Valli as a mature "madam." Everyone told Valli to sit for her own safety, but the short girl would stand on her seat to see out the window plainly. Valli would become irritated every time someone intruded on her privacy since she did not view herself as a child. She didn't want to be friends with a senior citizen who was concerned about her since she felt socially inept. She adored looking out the window and watching the running cow in the pasture.
She refused to exit the bus when they arrived in the town because she was too scared to do so on her own. She was quite excited to get home when she first saw the dead cow on the road. The cow that had previously been so happy was still there. Valli was horrified by the idea that a being so full of life might suddenly transform into something terrible. For the remainder of the voyage, she sat still. When she got home, she overheard her mother and aunt discussing about the possibilities in the outside world. They were both shocked when Valli confirmed what her mother had just said. She then explained her behaviour by saying that she was merely nodding in agreement with what her mother was saying. Then, her aunt described Valli as a youngster who acts like an adult, but only Valli understood what she meant as no one had heard about her bus trip.
