Magic with a Heart: P.C. Sorcar

4. 1. If the father of Indian magic, P.C. Sorcar senior, made the family art of magic popular beyond the boundaries of India, his son P.C. Sorcar Junior has made magic into a spectacular entertainment show. He has added modern techniques, three dimensional choreography, a mixture of traditional and modern music, classical dance, technical and mechanical instruments to his art.

2.Magic as performed by P.C. Sorcar Junior is closely linked to the hearts of people. He uses his skill to uplift emotions, bringing hope, cheer and happiness to his audience. He believes that the aim of magic is mainly to entertain people, and that entertainment is linked to happiness. His own happiness comes from the ‘bridge of oneness’ he builds with the spectators.

3.Sorcar Junior presents his magic in the form of mini scenes that show the problems and sufferings of people. His illusions provide solutions to problems, such as a lonely girl being reunited with her grandmother in ‘Granny’ or a lame person being able to walk. The ability to identify with the pain, the joy, the hopes and fears of the audience is what makes Sorcar such a brilliant magician.

4.In the real world, Sorcar Junior shows a deep concern for the poorer sections of society. He performs free shows for physically and mentally disabled people. In every season, he performs exclusively for orphans and for the bedridden in hospitals.

5.“If I can wipe off the tears of my brothers and sisters, and if I can produce food to fill their empty stomachs, only then will I be able to prove myself to be a magician. The ‘miracles’ I perform on stage are all illusions. How I wish I were a true magician so that I can solve problems and remove poverty forever…. I am happy to have been able to make at least some people smile, in the real sense, with the money I have earned through magic. I am thankful to my art…’ says P.C. Sorcar, the humanist.
