Magnesium and oxygen react to form magnesium oxide. The chemical equation for the reaction is given below


2Mg(s) +O2(g) → 2MgO(s)


i. What type of bonding exists in magnesium oxide?

ii. Why MgO has high melting point.

iii. Explain why magnesium is solid at room temperature?

iv. Explain why oxygen is a gas at room temperature?

v. State one test by which sodium chloride can be distinguished from carbon

i) Electrovalent / ionic bond

ii)As , it is an Ionic compounds . The bond between Mg and O is very strong ,so, it is hard to loosen the bond Between them , thus , it has high melting point ..

iii) Metals usually remain solid at room temp.
