Thae atominc number of magnesium is 12 and the atomic number of sodium is 11. The electronic configuration of magnesium is 2,8,2 and the electronic configuration of sodium is2, 8,1. both are completely filled with 2,8 i.e in their k and l shell. So their k and l shell are completely filled and they only have 2 and 1 valence electrons left.
Hope it helps you
Thanks
