Magnesium has electronic configuration of 2,8,2 then why it does not use duplet rule to become stable ?????

The electronic configuration of Mg is(2,8,2) thus its last shell has only 2 electrons.Mg may either give away 2 electrons(to acquire the configuration(2,8) or receive 6 electrons, to acquire the configuration(2,8,8) to become stable.
