From the 3 ions of the magnesium we might think that the third ionization energy will be greatest but here is the fact that, ionization energy is the energy to remove an electron from the outer most shell of a gaseous atom.

Now, if two electrons are removed from magnesium then the 2p will be the last orbital and will be full filled thus, will be having the maximum ionization energy. Hence, it is also the fact that magnesium forms mainly Mg+2 ions.
