answer : magnesium + oxygen ⇔ magnesium oxygen

explanation : magnesium is alkaline earth metal. atomic number of magnesium is 12. so, number of electrons in Mg = 12.

then, electronic configuration of Mg = 2, 8, 2

hence number of electrons in outermost shell = 2

so, valency of magnesium = 2

similarly we know, oxygen is nonmetal and atomic number of oxygen is 8.

so, electronic configuration of oxygen = 2, 6

means, oxygen will inert (follow octet )only when it gains 2 electrons in its outermost shell.

so, valency of oxygen is also 2.

then, magnesium and oxygen combines to form magnesium oxide (MgO)

so, reaction is ....

2Mg + O2 ⇔ 2MgO
