Answer:

Explan1)

2Mg + O₂  ---> 2MgO

Compound X ==> MgO  [ Magnesium Oxide ]

Compound Y ==> Mg₃N₂  [ Magnesium Nitride ]

if "X" , that is , Magnesium Oxide is dissolved in water , the product is Magnesium Hydroxide

MgO  + H₂O ---> Mg(OH)₂

This equation is already balanced !!

Magnesium ribbon is burnt in oxygen to give white compound X.

Mg + O2 → Compound X (white in colour)

If Magnesium (Mg) ribbon react with oxygen or if Magnesium ribbon burnt in the presence of oxygen then the formation of Magnesium oxide having formula MgO and energy in the form of light takes place.

The formed Magnesium oxide is white in colour. Also, compound X is Magnesium oxide (MgO)

2Mg + O2 → 2MgO + energy (in the form of light)

Now, if the compound X i.e. MgO reacts with water then the formation of Magnesium Hydroxide having formula Mg(OH)2 takes place.

Compound X + water → Compound Y

MgO + H2O → Mg(OH)2

Both the reactions (discussed above) are an example of Combination Reaction, as two or more reactants combine to form a single product.

a) The chemical formula of compound X = MgO

And the chemical formula of compound Y = Mg(OH)2

b) Balanced chemical reaction and equation

2Mg (s) + O2 (g) → 2MgO (s) + Energy

Magnesium + Oxygen → Magnesium oxide

MgO (s) + H2O (l) → Mg(OH)2 (aq)

Magnesium oxide + Water → Magnesium hydroxide
