take a magnet and a magnetic compass and bring it near to the north pole and slowly move towards the south pole of the magnet and mark all the points and draw lines parallel to the needle and u would be surprised to see that all the lines are in different directions. as the magnetic field is more than that of the magnetic field of the earth near any magnet. this forces the magnetic compass to get deflected towards the direction of the magnetic field lines.
