In KMnO4, the electronic configuration of Mn is [Ar]3d5 4s2 . Now to calculate the magnetic moment, we use the formula:

Mag.moment.=[n(n+2)]^1/2

Where n is the number of unpaired electrons in the d orbital. So in the case of Mn, the no of unpaired electrons is five(applying Hund's rule). So the answer we get is sq. root of 35 or 5.916 BM(Bohr Magneton).
