If a bar magnet is broken into two pieces, each pieces when suspended freely will point in the north-south direction.
This shows that if a bar magnet is broken into two or more smaller pieces, then the smallest piece is a complete magnet with two poles.
This shows the magnetic poles always occur in pairs.
