The statement that magnetic poles exist in pairs is correct.

Explanation:

This can be explained with the help  of an activity:-

  1. Take a bar magnet.
  2. Cut it into two or three pieces.
  3. Now take a piece and label its ends as A and B.
  4. Now bring another bar magnet near it.
  5. Firstly bring north pole of a bar magnet near the end A of magnet piece and then near the end B.
  6. You will find that the bar magnet will show attraction towards one of the end and repulsion towards the another end.

This shows that the end which shows attraction is acting like a south pole and another end is acting like a north pole. This is because like poles repel each other and unlike poles attract each other.
