Mn(0) [Ar]3d^5 4s^2; Mn in [MnCl4]^2- is Mn(II): [Ar]3d^5 (i.e., 4s^2 e-s lost first); Mn In [MnCl4]^2- is tetrahedral so it is high spin (small Δ) with 5 unp e-s.

In cmplxs the angular momentum component to the magnetic moment is quenched and the magnetic moment μ is simply given by the spin only formula μ = √S(S+2) BM where S is the number of unp e-s

hence μ = √5(5+2) = √35 = 5.92 BM. Determination of magnetic moments of 1st row TM cmplxs are routine (undergrad lab) and are usually found to be in good agreement with the spin only prediction.

cheers.
