Earth's magnetic field, also known as the geomagnetic field, is the magnetic field that extends from the Earth's interior out into space, where it interacts with the solar wind, a stream of charged particles emanating from the Sun. The magnetic field is generated by electric currents due to the motion of convection currents of molten iron in the Earth's outer core: these convection currents are caused by heat escaping from the core, a natural process called a geodynamo. The magnitude of the Earth's magnetic field at its surface ranges from 25 to 65 microteslas (0.25 to 0.65 gauss).[3] As an approximation, it is represented by a field of a magnetic dipole currently tilted at an angle of about 11 degrees with respect to Earth's rotational axis, as if there were a bar magnet placed at that angle at the center of the Earth. The North geomagnetic pole, currently located near Greenland in the northern hemisphere, is actually the south pole of the Earth's magnetic field, and conversel

1) the earth it self behaives like a magnet

2) the shape of the earth magnetic field assembles that of imaginary bar magnet of length one fifth of Earth diameter buried as a centre

3) the South Pole of earth magnet is in the geographical not because it attracts the north pole of the suspended magnet

4) similarly that north pole of the earth magnet is in geographical South Pole because it attract the South Pole of the suspended magnet

5) thus there is a magnet S Pole near the geographical north and a magnetic N pole near the geographical south

6) the position of Earth's magnetic poles are not well defined on the globe they are spread over an area the axis of earth magnet and the geographical Axis do not coincide with each other

7)the axis of Earth's magnetic field is inclined at an angle of about 15 degree with the geographical axis

8) due to this a freely suspended magnet make an angel abt 15 degree with the geographical axis and points only approximately in the north south directions

9)the Earth's magnetism is due to the magnetic effect of current .thus, earth is a huge electromagnetic

hope this will help you
