Magnetism oxide is formulated as Mg2+O2+ not as Mg+O+??why

$<b><I>Dear it is formulated as 2Mg+O2=2MgO.... we get this when we burn Magnesium in air... But oxygen in air is diatomic (O2) it can not found alone.. so to balance reaction we take two molecules of Magnesium....$
