In Experiment 1,
when you bring the compass near a strong bar magnet, the needle of the compass points in the direction of the south pole of the bar magnet. When you take the compass away from the bar magnet, it again points north.
In Experiment 2,
Step 1: Use a knife to cut a ½ inch-wide piece off the bottom of the cork. Step 2: Mark the four directions with a marker on one of the cork's flat sides, then set aside. Step 3: Rub the pointed end of the needle onto a magnet. This transfers the magnetism onto the needle so it will point north.
