The ratio of image to the height of the object is known as magnification. That is:-

Magnification= height of image/height of object.

or m=h2/h1

where h2= height of image.

h1=height of object.

or we can say that

m = -v/u

where v is image distance.

u is object distance.

IF the magnification has a plus sign,then the image is virtual and erect.

IF the magnification has a minus sign, then image is real and inverted.

when m<1 then image is enlarged.

m>1 then image is diminished.
