It is an apparatus which is used For detection of item which is in under water.
It is a technique that used sound to navigate and detect objects which is in under water.

Sonar are of two types
1 active sonar
2. Passive sonar

Active sonar produce signal or pulse of sound from water

While Passive sonar detect sound from the object which is under water.
