उनका जन्म २ अक्टूबर १८६९ को पोरबंदर में हुआ था जो वर्तमान में गुजरात में हे। हर साल उनकी जन्मदिन की सालगिरह पर राष्ट्रीय छुट्टी होती है। उन्होंने ब्रिटिश शासन से स्वतंत्रता पाने में भारत की मदद की। १८ वर्ष की उम्र में, १० अगस्त १८८८ को वह लॉ पढने के लिए लंदन गए।

Gandhi was the founder of the Indian Congress in the Natal region of South Africa. In the time magazine, he was named as the man of the year in 1930. He was named 'Mahatma' which means great soul after his death. In 1948, 30th January Gandhiji was shot thrice and was killed by the Hindu extremist.
