The study was conducted to observe fish diversity of Raigarh district, Chhattisgarh during November, 2011 to May, 2012. A total of 54 species under 36 genera, 21 families and 7 orders were recorded. Family Cyprinidae dominated the groups with 39% followed by Bagridae (9%), Channidae (6%), Schibeidae (6%), Siluridae (6%), and so on. Five new entrants recorded from the earlier works namely, Eutropiichthys murius, Gagata gagata, Johanius gangaticus, Ompak pabda and Tor putitora. The dominant species was recorded as Mastacembelus armatus, Parambassis ranga, Sperata aor, Sperata seenghala and Xenentodon cancila. Out of 54 species identified 16 were promising ornamental fishes, nine species fall under threatened group of NBFGR criteria, they were two endangered species Tor tor, Tor putitora and seven vulnerable fishes, Bagarius bagarius, Gonialosa manminna, Heteropneustes fossilis, Ompok pabda, Sperata aor, Eutropiichthys vacha, Systomus sarana. The study indicates that Mahanadi River in Raipur district in Chhattisgarh is a hotspot of fish diversity and suitable conservation measures should follow immediately to sustain the diversity in the region.
