MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) – Sugarcane sowing area in Maharashtra has increased by 45 percent in current kharif season, against the previous year. While, country's cane acreage also rose by 6 percent.

As per the latest Kharif sowing report released by Agriculture department, as on July 06, 2017, the total area under sugarcane cultivation was reported at 47.93 lakh hectares in India, which is 2.71 lakh hectares higher from the last year on corresponding date. In 2016-17, the total sugarcane area was reported at 45.22 lakh hectares.

Sowing area has majorly increased in Maharashtra, as per the report total cultivated area of sugarcane was 9.18 lakh hectares unto July 06, area increased by 45.02 percent against the previous season. In 2016-17, acreage recorded at 6.33 lakh hectares.

However, as per the initial estimates sugar production in Maharashtra is expected to be 70 lakh to 75 lakh tonnes in 2017-18 (October-September), against the current season's sugar output of 41.87 lakh tonnes.

Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are the major sugar producing states in India.

Uttar Pradesh, a largest sugar producing state of India, estimated to produce more than 90 lakh tonnes of sugar in next season, while north indian state has produced 87.50 lakh tonnes of sugar in current sugar season 2016-17.

However, as per the third advance estimates of production of Commercial Crops for 2016-17 by Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers welfare, sugarcane production of India is estimated at 3,060.27 lakh tonnes, about 12.17 percent lower from the previous year. Country had produced 3,467 lakh tonnes of sugarcane in 2015-16.

Although, in 2016-17 SS, India's sugar production is estimated to be 203 lakh tonnes, against the sugar output of 251 lakh tonnes in 2015-16. While the National Federation of Co-operative sugar factories ltd, forecasted the 25 percent higher sugar production in next sugar season at 250 lakh tonnes.
