Mahatma Gandhi's arrival in India from South Africa did broaden the base of the Indian  national movement.

  • For his role in leading non-violent civil uprisings, Mahatama Gandhi is perhaps the most widely known figure in the Indian Nationalist Movement. He first used the non-violent tactic in South Africa, where he worked
  • As a prosecutor for an expatriate, when he experienced the oppression and abuse of coloured people under white rule, he was hurt and furious.
  • In the region, he organised non-violent protests that gained him fame and support from the South African people.
  • In India he then led the Satyagraha movement, Dandi March, the Non Cooperation Movement and the Quit India movement to put an end to the British rule.
