Mahatma Gandhi went to South Africa (Natal) in order to fight a case in support of Indian muslim merchant Dada Abdulla. (in 1892)

When Mahatma Gandhi reached there he was shocked to see how Indians and black people were treated there. He was attacked by the police and was even asked to remove his turban. He was called "coolie" and was removed from first-class compartment he was traveling in. There were also laws that restricted the freedom of Indians.
.
Seeing all these, he formed "Natal Indian Congress" in 1894.

Gandhiji started Satyagraha movement in South Africa demanding abolishing existing laws that curbed the freedom of Indians. This was his first satyagraha which was also very successful.

Mahatma Gandhi returned to India on 9 January, 1915
